Dartmoor Tree Surgeons, Devon - Environmental Policy

Waste Management

Our commitment is to minimise waste and recycle wherever possible. All brushwood is chipped for use as mulch and timber arisings are stored until donation/sale for use.

Environmental Impact

Our commitment wherever possible is to mitigate our environmental impact by:

  • Using bio-degradable chainsaw oil
  • Purchasing equipment designed to reduce environmental impact
  • Working within guidelines set out in the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, the Countryside Rights of Way Act 2000, the Control of Pesticides Regulations 1986 and Part III of the Food and Environment Protection Act 1985.

Nesting Birds

All birds and their nests and eggs are protected by law under the Wildlife and Countryside Act and the recent Countryside and Rights of Way Act. Many other species of animals are also protected i.e bats and badgers. Dartmoor Tree Surgeons routinely undertake a Habitat Disturbance Assessment at all sites before undertaking any tree work. If protected species or their roosts are discovered whilst undertaking tree work, operatives must stop work and inform their supervisor who will contact the relevant authorities for further advice. Management and staff of Dartmoor Tree Surgeons have been trained in recognising likely bat roosts and in handling bats and have undertaken a number of contracts throughout Devon specifically aimed at habitat management of bats.

Veteran Trees

Dartmoor Tree Surgeons recognise the value of these unique ancient habitats. Veteran trees require specialised management techniques, with long term ecological considerations requiring perspectives of decades rather than years. Dartmoor Tree Surgeons are committee to giving the most up to date advice on the management of veteran trees and their associated habitats.
